Richard Rodriguez

Premise:

Rodriguez's argument:

Rodriguez argues that a person is individualized in two different ways, publicly and privately, and that a child may be shy in the classroom because of a language barrier, not because they are a slower learner or because there is something wrong.

Evidence:

".. there are two ways a person is individualized. So they do not realize that while one suffers a diminished sense of private individuality by becoming assimilated into public society, such assimilation makes possible the achievement of public individuality" (39).


This is showing that a teacher needs to recognize that a student is different in a school setting/ public setting than they are in the home.

"Because i wrongly imagined that English was intrinsically a public language and Spanish an intrinsically private one, I easily noted the difference between classroom language and the language of of home. At school, words were directed to a general audience of listeners. Words were meaningfully ordered. And the point was not self-expression alone but to make oneself understood by many others" (34).

If children are not taught at a younger age enough english to make it in the classroom than they are going to be confused and get lost easily. Teachers need to realize this and do their best to help them as much as they can by making it clear as to what they are saying.

Comments:

If a student can speak english and spanish I think that's great. It's something that I wish I could do. And it shouldn't be stifled as much as it is in the classroom. Children need to learn to embrace their background, not be ashamed of it.
